No 8am service during August

We know how much people value this Communion service, however with attendance often very low and lack of clergy available to cover, we have made the decision to pause this service over the month of August.  The Wednesday 10am Communion provides an alternative quieter service in the week.  If regulars would like a Book of Common Prayer service during this time, there is a weekly 8am BCP at St Andrew’s, Headington.

For Children and families Bring and Share picnic lunch next Sunday July 5th from 11.30am in the Vicarage garden. Please bring some food to share. Squash, water and cups will be provided.

Building Firm Foundations Appeal 2026

We launched an appeal last month to raise £100,000 by the end of 2026.  This is to help pay off our building loan and fix our leaky roof.  Thank you to all who have generously donated and/or pledged.  An update will be given shortly.

Walk to Wheatley Windmill, Sunday 12th July

Join us on a walk to visit Wheatley’s restored working windmill (see: wheatleymill.co.uk). We shall leave The Plain (aka Shotover car park) at 12.15, each with a picnic, water, and ‘sensible shoes’ (we need to be able to climb a ladder in the mill). There is no admission charge, but donations are appreciated to contribute to the upkeep of the windmill. Coffee/tea and cake can be bought. NB Some rough ground and some uphill walking are involved, but we’ll avoid the footpath with flights of grassy steps.
We anticipate being back at The Plain c5.30. Alternatively, the 400 bus runs from Wheatley to Headington half-hourly (at .19 and .49 minutes past the hour) taking 20 minutes. Numbers are limited. To sign up please contact Jan McLeod, Anthea Boylston, Margaret Samuel or Hilary Rollin after church, or phone Hilary on 01865 761545. Hilary Rollin for Eco Church Group.

This week’s Eco Tip

Time to think ahead to Plastic-Free July; be part of the solution to plastic pollution by avoiding single-use plastic. Take the challenge to reduce the plastic lying in our streets, floating in our rivers, accumulating in vast ‘plastic soups’ in our oceans (concentrations of microplastics mixed with larger debris), as in The Great Pacific Garbage Patch -three times the size of France-.To sign up to the challenge go to: https://www.plasticfreejuly.org/ electricity bill. NB Outside lights left on at night are detrimental to the wildlife that you are probably trying to encourage. Hilary Rollin (Eco Church Group)

Wood Farm Fete, Sat 18 July 2-5pm

Retreats at the Old Parsonage FREELAND Oxford – 2026

Monday 6th July to Thursday 9th July Title: Place your eyes before the mirror of eternity. Led by Helen Stanton Cost £ 225.00.
The retreat is based upon the premise that from icons and nature to other visual stimuli, as we pay close attention to what is created, we will find that God is gazing lovingly back at us. We will spend time thinking about what lies behind this premise, and looking at icons, nature and paintings or sculpture. No previous experience of the art world is required.
Friday 16th October to Sunday 18th October. Title: Putting Wonder Into Words: Led by The Rev’d Rob Gilbert.   Cost £ 185.00
Everyone, throughout their lives, experiences wonder: amazement at the beauty of the world, perceived at all scales. This retreat will explore the meanings to be found in the human appreciation of beauty in nature and in the sciences, and what our words about wonder might be reflecting of the Word of God.
Rob Gilbert is an Anglican Priest currently serving in two parishes in the Oxford Diocese. He is a scientist by training, and works in the University of Oxford where he is attached to the Nuffield Department of Medicine and to Magdalen College.
Booking forms and further details for these retreats are available from Revd Jean King on oxfordretreat@yahoo.co.uk
32 Ambleside Drive, Headington, Oxford OX3 0AQ.
